Religious Education

"Catechists must hand on the teachings of Christ to those being catechized; ...Catechists must make the words of Christ their own: 'My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me,' and they confess with Saint Paul, 'I handed on to you...what I also received'" (National Directory for Catechisis, Ch 4:29E).

Catechists, from the Greek word 'echo,' are people who echo the Word of God. The Catechism of the Catholic church notes that: "A catechist must develop the skills necessary to effectively teach the heart and mind of Christ as proclaimed in the teaching of the Church. Training in theology as well as classroom management and pedagogy are essential elements in a catechist's preparation and formation" (CCC 906).

Bishop David Zubik, our bishop has challenged all of us to be the Church Alive!, to communicate the faith in ways that are ever faithful and ever new. Being Alive necessitates an openness in the heart of every catechist to continually grow in the faith. Our training and the joy we gain from our own education can help us accomplish this.

In our diocese, it is the policy that every catechist gain catechetical certification. Catechetical certification for volunteer catechists consists of completion of four basic courses: creed, sacraments, morality, and methods. Certification is required to be updated with 30 additional hours of course work every five years thereafter.

Basic Certification Courses are often held here in our parish or in other parishes in our area. Basic Certification can be acquired over time, and there is no time limit on when a catechist must attain this level of certification.

Our Catechists teach the following grades:

  • Wee Celebrate - an early formation program for children ages 4 and 5
  • 1st through 8th grade.
    • These classes are held each Sunday morning from 9:45 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. in the school building.
  • 2nd grade - a sacramental preparation year for Reconciliation and Eucharist
  • 9th grade - a sacramental preparation year for Confirmation
    • Classes for 9th grade students are held every other Sunday from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the parish office.

The schedule follows the Catechetical Year from September through April.
Confirmation and First Eucharist are celebrated in the spring of each year.
